What To Do in an Active Shooter Situation

Updated: May 13, 2023

What do you do in an active shooter situation? Run, Hide or Fight! The chilling reality of an active shooter scenario is a terrifying prospect. Such situations are often fraught with panic and chaos. However, having a well-thought-out plan can drastically increase your chances of survival. The Department of Homeland Security advocates for the "Run, Hide, Fight" strategy as an effective response to such perilous circumstances.

Responding to Gunshots - Prioritize Escape Over All Else

The sudden sound of gunfire or the startling sight of a weapon can be paralyzing, but prompt action is crucial. Your primary objective should always be to evacuate. Swiftly yet calmly, distance yourself from the danger, assisting others along the way if you can do so without risking your own safety.

Look for the nearest exit signs. If none are visible, intuitively navigate towards the closest escape route. In this situation, your belongings are expendable — leave them if you must. And remember, elevators are potential traps, so it's best to avoid them.

Once you've reached a secure location, dial 911. Provide them with as much detailed information as you can about the ongoing incident. Remember, every second counts, and your prompt actions can save lives, including your own.

When Escape Isn't an Option: Seek Concealment and Prepare to Defend

In circumstances where flight isn't feasible, your survival could depend on your ability to effectively hide. Seek out a location that offers cover from the shooter's line of sight; ideally, a locked room, a concealed closet, or a bathroom could serve this purpose.

Make your hideout as inconspicuous as possible: darken the room by switching off any lights and ensure your phone is silenced. To maximize your safety, barricade the entrance using any substantial furniture or objects at your disposal.

If your safe haven is breached, be ready to defend yourself. Identify any object within your reach that could potentially be used as a makeshift weapon. Throughout this ordeal, strive to maintain silence and composure until law enforcement arrives. Remember, your aim is to stay unnoticed and prepared for any eventuality.

The Final Stand: Fight for Survival

If escape or concealment aren't viable, or if your sanctuary is discovered, be prepared to defend yourself as a last resort. This course of action is inherently high-risk and should only be undertaken when all other options have been exhausted.

In this dire circumstance, utilize any items within your reach as makeshift weapons; chairs, fire extinguishers, or even scissors can be wielded with force. If others are present, collaborate to overpower the shooter. Your collective strength can be a formidable force.

Remember, the primary objective is to incapacitate the shooter, not to take their life. The aim is to disrupt their actions long enough to allow for an escape or the arrival of law enforcement. In such a situation, your life and the lives of others are paramount.

Additional Tips to Keep in Mind:

  • Maintaining calm and minimizing noise are crucial. Silence any devices that could inadvertently disclose your location, such as music or electronics.

  • Refrain from responding to calls or text messages, irrespective of the sender. Remember, it's possible that the shooter might attempt to coax you out of your safe space.

  • When law enforcement arrive, ensure your hands are visible and follow their directives meticulously to avoid any misunderstandings.

Forethought can significantly enhance your safety during an active shooter event. Acquaint yourself with the emergency procedures of your workplace or school, and pinpoint potential exit routes and refuge locations. Share and discuss the "Run, Hide, Fight" strategy with your family and colleagues to ensure everyone is equipped to react if an emergency arises.

Bear in mind that no two active shooter situations are identical, and there is no universal response. The key is to remain vigilant, composed, and to take any measures possible to ensure your safety.
